Rene Russo grew up in Burbank. Her parents are Nino Russo and Shirley Balocca. Shirley is employed as a barmaid. Her father was also an artist and technician left the family after Rene was two years old. Rene and Toni were later raised by their single mother. Her father was of Italian origin as was her mother of Italian and German-English-Irish ancestry. Rene was diagnosed with scoliosis when she was in her junior year and was required to wear a full torso brace. Some of her classmates called the girl Jolly Green Giant because she was so tall. The brace she was wearing was removed as she began Burroughs High School, and although her classmates Ron Howard joined her there too, she was somewhat of an outcast. Rene could not handle both the academic and social aspect that high school offers. The school dropped her out of tenth. To save money, Rene took a series of jobs that were part-time for 18 months. Many were free. The theater she worked at was as a hostess where the movies were all free. Then she became a restaurateur and got the food she needed for free. Then she was employed at Disneyland at a Disneyland store as cashier. There were two jobs she worked at the same time. Her last permanent job, which was only to pay the salary.
